Description

Compiled as the city of Albuquerque celebrates its Tricentennial, Albuquerque: Portrait of a City celebrates the city’s rich history and culture while providing travelers with a selection of the best places to go and things to do. Created with the input of the City of Albuquerque and the Tricentennial Committee, this book describes threads that bind the city and its neighborhoods together, creating a dynamic modern urban center. It also helps visitors and residents become aware of what makes the city and its attractions unique.

Part I of the book begins with a historical/cultural retrospective, including illuminating contributions from historians and representatives of museums and cultural centers, a fascinating short history of Old Town drawn largely from old documents and original sources, historical and economic summaries, and an introduction to the city’s various neighborhoods. Photographs and other illustrations show the city as it was. This human history covers who came and why, and how each group influenced the whole, making Albuquerque unique. Rapid growth in recent years is part of the story of a city that is constantly evolving and recreating itself, based on the needs of its diverse citizens, coming together to create a rapidly growing modern city. This section also contains a sidebar of historical events drawn from the Tricentennial Timeline by Tom Miles as well as factoids collected for the Tricentennial celebration.

Part II provides a travel guide to the various destinations that make Albuquerque a special place. Visitors will find plenty to do for the whole family, including a wide variety of museums, cultural centers, outdoor recreation sites, nature and wildlife centers, sporting events, and several Indian Pueblos featuring their own activities, arts and crafts events, casinos and calendar of events. Accommodations are listed by area, but restaurants, galleries and shopping areas are listed by category for ease of use. Another chapter summarizes nearby areas of interest, including Santa Fe and Taos. The book concludes with a calendar of annual special events, including the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The listing for each attraction includes its address, local and toll-free phone numbers and website (if any), so the visitor can find the most recent information online. Albuquerque has recently received accolades in the national press, including: Forbes Number 1 in Best Places for Business and Careers (“Albuquerque has suddenly turned business-friendly–attracting new enterprises and creating highly skilled and well-paid manufacturing jobs.”); Kiplinger’s Number 3 in the Top 50 Smart Places to Live (“Albuquerque offers resort-town ambience, a boomtown economy and cow-town prices. And the city’s laid-back pace gives you plenty of time to enjoy the sunsets. Shades of pinks, blues, reds and oranges—best enjoyed from atop the Sandia Mountains—frame the desert skyline with stark beauty.”); USA Today selection as one of top six TRAVEL destinations in the world (and only one in US) to watch in 2006 (“Albuquerque is celebrating its Tricentennial and will host a series of special events January through October. Albuquerque, which is always a relatively affordable destination, will also host its 34th annual International Balloon Fiesta Oct. 6-15, the largest balloon event in the world.”) Why Albuquerque? Read this book and find out.
